South Korea has made seven consecutive appearances at the World Cup and South Africa will be no different. Korea’s last visit to the World Cup was a disappointment because they failed to make it to the Final 16, despite playing well. The road to South Africa has not been an easy one. Two scoreless draws against their neighbors, North Korea really hurt the team morale, but North Korea pulled things together and managed to qualify.
The greatest strengths of South Korea are very much reflective of their culture. They play well together and their cohesiveness is a definite asset. Knowing their teammates strengths and weakness is how they play.
The greatest weakness of South Korea is not having enough good players. When it is time to rotate out players, there tends to be a big gap in skill. The lower level of skill from substitutes is a real problem for the South Koreans.
With the nickname “Three Lung Park,” Park Ji-Sung is a player to know. He leads in attacks for the South Koreans. He is a very fast player and lives up to his nickname. Also look for midfielder Ki Sung-Yong. Yong is an up and coming star and is expected to do great things in his career. Yong is a great tool in the midfield and is one of the best crossers around.
The best chance for Korea to do well is their first game against Greece. Getting points early on is vital to South Korea’s success.
