South Africa
South Africa is hosting the 2010 World Cup and hopes to perform well for their hometown crowd. South Africa has had two previous appearances at the World Cup.
South Africa automatically qualified for the World Cup for being the hosts. Despite not having to qualify, the South African squad is quickly improving and deserves a spot in the Group stage. This will be the first time the World Cup has been held on the African continent.
South Africa is a very agile and fast team. They have been to out maneuver well respected teams. They have always had very good goalkeepers.
The weakness of the South African team is goal making. There are no strikers or midfielders that are hitting the back of the net.
If South Africa is going to make any goals, then it will probably be by Benni McCarthy. His experience was gained in top European leagues has prepared him to play at top level. In the midfield the best tool is Steven Pienaar. Pienaar is a good all around player and should be involved in some important plays during the World Cup. He is good at defense, but also is involved in attacks.
South Africa has the support of the hometown crowd and needs to move on from the Group stage to keep from disappointing them. Even though they need to impress, they are in a hard group. Beating both France and Mexico is a tall order, but is definitely not out of the question.
