Slovenia
Slovenia is a very small country, but they were able to pool enough talent to beat many larger countries in the World Cup qualifying matches. Slovenia has only made it to the World Cup finals twice before. By qualifying for the Group stage Slovenia pushed out larger countries like the Czech Republic, Poland, and Russia.
Slovenia defense is for sure the team’s best strength. During the qualifying matches Slovenians conceded only six goals during a total of twelve games. The low score of opposing teams can be attributed to the strong defense.
The weakness of the team is their wings and midfield. There are no stars in these positions and it shows. The midfield fails to push the ball forward. If the frontline cannot get the ball, then they will never score goals. The defense ends up saving the midfielders.
Milivoje Novakovic is the man to watch for goals. Novakovic is the best striker on the team. The midfield is not completely talentless and Robert Koren proves that point. Koren is a very upbeat player, but he rarely receives the help he needs from the other midfields on the team.
On the defensive side of the field Samir Handanovic, the goalkeeper, is the man to watch. Handanovic can stop balls from all directions from entering the goal.
Slovenia’s goal is defiantly to make it to the Knock Out stage. The reality is that they are not favored to do so. England and the USA will both be hard teams to beat.
