Portugal

Portugal has been working hard for the past few years and their hard work has been paying off.  Taking 4th place at the World Cup in Germany left them wanting to come back for more.  The beginning of Portugal’s qualifying matches left many worried that they would be eliminated.  Hard work in the second round of the World Cup qualifying matches secured Portugal a spot in the Finals.

Portugal’s biggest asset is their back line.  The back line is very strong and rarely lets anything get by.  The next best thing that Portugal has going for them is their midfield.  The defense on the team is pretty well matched for any of their opposing teams.

While Portuguese is very good at defense, they are not so great at offensive scoring.  The team really lacks strikers that are capable of scoring goals.   The front line ends up depending on their midfielders to score.

Cristiano Ronaldo is Portugal’s main chance of scoring a goal.  He plays for the Real Madrid team and is known for being the highest paid player in the sport.  The team lacks stars, but watch out for the center-back Ricardo Carvalho. Carvahollo gets things done without being asked. Also watch for the midfielder Raul Meireles.  Meireles is great on defense, but when given the chance, he can be a great attacker.

Portugal is expected to do very well in this round.  Both games against North Korea and the Ivory Coast should be extremely entertaining.  The best game to watch is Portugal versus the powerhouse Brazil.  Portugal is Brazil’s main threat in the Group round.
