Paraguay has consistently made it to the World Cup finals the past four times.  The Paraguay squad has been to the World Cup a total of eight times.  To qualify, Paraguay had to contend with the very hard South American group.  If they can make it past the Knock Out round it would be a first, and quite the accomplishment for the Paraguay team.

Paraguay’s greatest strength has always been their defense.  The defense is able to stand up to world-class teams.  Watch out for Paraguayan counterattacks because they are fierce and fast!  Also, forget about contending with Paraguay in an aerial contest for the ball

Small possession time of the ball is a problem that the Paraguay team often encounters.  They rely more on counterattacks than they do possessions.  Any team that can pass a ball well could potentially dominate the Paraguay team.

Even though Paraguay has an excellent defense, they also have some scorers.  Salvador Cabanas is a player that is always looking for a way to sneak in a goal.  He is creative and quite relentless on the field.  Nelson Haedo Valdez is another attacker that can get things done on the front line.  He has tremendous speed and technique.

Italy is favored in this group, but that does not mean that Paraguay could not put up a good fight in their first game.  If Italy is not playing to their full ability, the South American style soccer could prove to be the best team.  The experience of Paraguay will also give them an edge against Slovakia and New Zealand.
