Italy
Italy, the defending champions of the World Cup, knows what it takes to win the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Italy has won a total of four World Cups, putting them just behind Brazil’s five. Though Italy has not done very well in the other tournaments, they have played well since they won the World Cup in 2006. Despite their current less than expected performance, Italy has what it takes to be successful in South Africa.
Italy has a lot of strength. Italy’s greatest strength is their cohesive team play. When the Italian team acts as a single unit it can accomplish anything. Cohesion helps star players from becoming arrogant and it helps the team to win games.
The Italians lack star players on their front line. They do not have anyone that can attack the goal for some easy points. If a team can score on Italy, than the team’s lack of scoring talent could be devastating to their season.
One of the most well respected team members is the goalie Gianluigi Buffon. He refuses to let anything go by him without a putting up a fight. Also watch out for veteran, Fabio Cannavaro. Cannavaro is 36 years old and has the experience to lead the rest of the team to victory.
Italy is favored to be very successful in its group, and anything less than making it to the semifinals would be a huge disappointment. Watch Italy in the group stages to see if they can pull things together and come home with another World Cup victory.
