Greece
Greece is a team that came out of nowhere and surprised many. When they won the Euro in 2004 they demanded respect and showed that they could play with the best. Greece has only been to the World Cup one time before, which was 16 years ago. Despite their World Cup presence they have skill and are ready to compete with the world’s best. Greece struggled to qualify in a relative easy qualifying group, losing two matches to Switzerland.
The strength of the Greece team lies in their defense. The backline is able to stop attacks from very good teams.
The weakness of the Greece is pretty much everywhere else on the field. They lack creativity and fail to come up with good attacks. The team lacks any real star players and there are no real strikers.
A lot of the same players that were on the Euro 2004 Greek team are still playing. The experience of these players gained during that championship is extremely important. The only strength in the midfield is Giorgos Karagounis. Karagounis is a leader and a playmaker. The strength of the backline is Sotirios Kyrgiakos. He is rarely topped when a challenger comes in his direction.
Not much is expected to come out of the Greek team. Everyone in the group expects to gain points off of them. Hopefully the Greeks can pull things together like they did back at the Euro 2004. Greece’s best chances of winning are against the Nigeria and South Korea teams.
