Australia
Australia, also known as the Socceroos, made their second appearance in the World Cup Finals in 2006. After being absent for 32 years, the Socceroos had a disappointing showing in 2006, but have gained experience and are ready to do better this time around. Australia qualified strong in the Asia Campaign coming out first in their group which secured a spot in the Group stage.
The strength of the Australian team is their defense. The defensive side is very well organized and plays very well together as a team. The Socceroos defense is the largest part of why they have qualified for the World Cup Finals. Watch for the defenders fast speed and high level of fitness.
The Socceroos struggle with their front line the most. There are no strong forwards on the line to score goals. While the defense picks up a lot of slack, you still need a good offense to be truly successful.
If the Australian squad is going to be able to score any goals, then it will probably be by the skills of Tim Cahill. Cahill is a strong midfielder, which is the team’s only hope for a strong attack. Mark Schwarzer, the goalkeeper, is a veteran on the Australian team. He is older, but his experience and skills is definitely an asset to the team.
The game against Germany will definitely be a hard one to win. The best chances for Australia to move on to the Knock Out round are to win against Ghana and Serbia. The game against Ghana is the game to watch and could go to either team.
