World Cup Preview: Australia vs. Serbia
Australia and Serbia will faceoff on the 23rd of June in the 2010 World Cup. These teams are both out of Group D, which is largely considered to be one of the best groups of teams in all of the World Cup.
Serbia is rated by many to be one of the top 10 teams in the world, world cup odds favorite and will be a tough draw for Australia in many ways.
Australia has not seen very many teams that have as much talent as Serbia does. Serbia has 16 players that play for the major club leagues. Meanwhile Australia has been known for their recent improvement, but has not been playing very difficult teams in the Asian Football Confederation. This will be a difficult draw for Australia as Serbia has top level players at nearly every position.
Everyone knows that the key will for Australia will be their goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer. Though Schwarzer is a great keeper, it will still be difficult for him as the defense in front of him is widely considered to be weak. To compound this problem, Serbia has a dominant offensive attack.
Australia is by no means counted out but they do have their work cut out for them. Though Serbia has a relatively strong defense, it is possible to put to ball in the net against them. These games are typically low scoring. So long as Australia manages to remain in striking distance, they can pull out a victory in this game. Every game counts in these groups as not everyone can advance to the next round.
